Congratulations to Austin! She came in 2nd place in her first karate competition held in Richmond, VA. Check out the size of the medal. Austin holds a greenbelt and will be testing on Nov. 17 for her purple belt. She is a member of the Blackbelt Club at her school, Grandmaster Dong’s Martial Arts in Morehead City. Austin is an extremely polite and determined young lady. We wish you well Austin.

Reading Log

Students read 20 minutes each night. They have composition books or notepad paper in which to use as their reading log. After 20 minutes they will write a three sentence summary in their reading log about what they just read. Also included in each entry is the title of the book, the present date, the number of pages read and the author’s name.

We are practicing this in class using the book Frindle. Reading logs will be collected each Friday. Entries need to be written neatly in pencil, no ink pens please. Students earn 2 points per completed entry (8 for the week) as part of their reading grade.

Homework planners can be picked up at the beginning of school at BSE.

* As a bonus a hand sized dictionary is recommended (found at any dollar store). This is handy in the sense that once a student learns a word (whether spelling, vocabulary, writing, or other) he or she can highlight it. As the school year goes on, they can flip through their dictionary to see all the words they have learned. It serves as a helpful quick reference to those that might have forgotten a word previously learned. By highlighting, it helps eliminate search time.

Gym shoes are also required for days we attend PE.
